Europe has gone a long way through hostility and war to attain the understanding that the only way to build and secure freedom and prosperity is mutual respect, cooperation and solidarity. The hopes and promises of those laying ground for the European project more than half a century ago have materialized into an unprecedented period of peace and welfare. The concept has proven its high quality and puts Europe at the forefront of political civilization in a globalizing world.

In the recent past various challenges, either of internal or external origin, have shaken the stability of the European Union. At the same time many citizens have got used to the high quality of life and do not appreciate adequately the relevance of European cooperation for achieving it.

The European Union is endowed with institutions coined by democratic principles and accountability. Legislation is based on a two chamber system and general elections leave the power with the uppermost sovereign, the people.

Being a democracy in the making the European Union is open for improvement. Its history has been a continuous process of political construction and reform focusing on building organizational structures. At the same time the development of a European public sphere has been strikingly lagging behind. Language barriers and distinct cultural traditions have paired with the absence of sufficient measures to foster the development of a common space for political deliberation. The resulting lack of democratic legitimacy has frustrated citizens and poses a major threat to their commitment to the European project.

Based on these considerations we are convinced that time has come for a qualitative shift in European politics by establishing a European political party which is by definition supranational, by nature culturally diverse and by identity European.
